View Full Version : VDS#5 or Discounted Dedicated special? Which to Choose?
i just want to send in my western union form to FDC until i see the discounted offer.
VDS #5:
512MB RAM
40GB Disk Space
100Mbit connection
unmetered transfer
Free control panel
IRC allowed
up to 60 free IPs
and discounted dedicated server:
(i think its special #4 which has been discounted)
AMD 1400 (actual speed 1Ghz)
512MB RAM
40GB HDD
REDHAT
Windows 2003
FREEBSD FREE
5Mbit Unmetered
connection
both of them priced at $99
so, i need your help to choose them. which is better ?
fyi, i will use the server to host a lot of medias such as animes, pictures, soundtrack, trailers and so on. and it would eat a lot of bandwitdh. so, really need some help in this.
Than choose for the vds #5, 5mbit isn't that fast.
ermm...thanks for the reply..
just curious, what is the differences between those 2? i mean like one is virtual dedicated server and another is dedicated server but the priced (actual) is far different. anyone care to explain?

The first one is VDS ( shared server) so you will be sharing resources with other FDC VDS clients... The second one is a dedicated box..you alone will be on it.
i would suggest the second one as it not only has 100 Mbps bgp unmetered bw ( compared to 5 Mbps unmetered bw for the vds), but itz dedicated ( all the raw juice available to you).
pardon?

cant it be i mislook it?
the vds#5 has 100Mbit and the one with 5Mbit is the dedicated.
and which mean you suggest me to take the VDS#5 instead of dedicated 5Mbit?

First of all, I have to tell you that I have no experience of FDC's virtual servers so my opinion is exclusively based to the above specifications you provided.
VDS servers are sharing proccessor (CPU), memory (RAM), storage (HDD), network interface (NIC) while Dedicated servers do not. So the main differences are Shared/Dedicated Hardware + Lower/Higher Traffic.
This is what I personal recommend you:
If you're planning to use the server only for serving files, get the VDS one that has 100 Mbps connection and it can push 3000-5000 GB/month (9-16 Mbit/s average) according to FDCserver's Term of Service: http://www.fdcservers.net/tos.html
If you're planning to use the server for both serving files and hosting huge website with SQL dbs that will depend on proccessing/harddisk performance and you don't need speeds more than ~600 kB/sec (5 Mbit/s), then get the dedicated server
If you're planning to use the server for serving files or sites or anything and will need to use more than 5000 GB/monthly (16+ Mbit/s average), then you should start thinking for 1 Gbps servers that FDCservers offers with 50-100 TB monthly transfer (166-331 Mbit/s average).
:goodluck:
wow! nice explanation..
now ive made up my mind..im going to buy the vds one (vds#5). looking at the reply above, im definitely going to need much much bandwitdh for serving files.
One other question. i see that FDC offers upgrade. Can i upgrade the space (HDD) of the vds? because the link is in dedicated server page. i hope you know what i meant..

Mikron15 made a really good point mentioning about BGP/NON-BGP. I have no idea which segment (IRC or WEB) each server is located. WEB segment is having a BGP mix, while IRC segment doesn't.
Regarding hdd upgrade on VDS package, I understood what you mean but I have no clue. I believe this is something that should be answered officially from FDCservers' sales.
Keep in mind, that we just give you opinions here. If you need official sales help, you should contact sales@fdcservers.net
thank you for replying to my thread. really appreciate it.

What method of payment did you use? If wire transfer, etc not long at all. If its bank stuff, expect up to proabably 4-5 business days for it to be confirmed, etc. Should be standard setup time once they receive your payment .

Ah ok. Well it shouldnt be to long, as its not like the money is walking its way to Chicago right now LOL .
another question.
i have a torrent script (http://www.torrentflux.com) and would like to install it in ther server. apart from the script, i have also a custom script which my friend create. its somekind similar to this one.
can i? i mean, is it allowed?
the script will auto fetch anime from torrent.
i would assume if it is used for LEGAL AND LEGIT reasons it would be ok. However you may run into some major problems if you start serving 'warez'
i wont be serving any warez. just fetching animes..thats all

nyunyu, read FDC's TOS located at http://fdcservers.net/tos.html , and the AUP located at http://fdcservers.net/aup.html . Even if its not mentioned, doesnt mean its allowed. I might recccomend e-mailing Sales@FDCServers.net or Petr@FDCServers.net and ask to make sure :). Good luck!
already sent him an email..but maybe he will reply in 2 @ 3 days..i'll wait
it will be worth the wait.... better safe then sorry :cops:

Odd how it takes him (Petr) 6-8 hours to reply to me, but days to answer others. Maybe he just likes me .
maybe its because FDC didnt received my payment just yet :p
