Hello FDC,

I am interested in your VDS in the (near?) future and would like opinions from the other clients on the VDS server of how it is working, their experiences with the service. I heard there was a big issue that was happening such as speed and uptime, but has that changed? Thank you.

vds's are good for their money but personally iv come to hate them, redhat is the biggest problem for me, im stuck with cpanel and its rpm upgrades which wont let me keep mysql 4.1.x installed unless i disabled cpanel updating any rpm's at all and on it goes. then there is the fact you cant use your own kernel so if you wanted to do any bandwidth limiting or fancy firewall rules (reverse squid proxy) then your up the creek without a paddle . . .

as for speed and reliability, its good, its at least as good as a normal dedicated server reliability wise, speed is decent on my vds tho it has some shit fits . . . probably didnt really answer your question the best but thats just how i see it

depends what you need it for really, i wont be buying another vds tho, thats for sure.

i have one vds with fdc and i'm very dissapointed with it
it has VERY big loads probably because some other client is overusing the resources

we have software implemented into the virtual dedicated server accounts , which gives you your very own CPU resources.

You may have something set up wrong in your control panel causing your issue

I'm probably the guy hehehe. :) Nah. :) FDC gives what they say they will give. Even more. :)

If they say it is shared bandwidth, it is shared bandwidth. It doesn't say you're on shared resources. :) Virtual is vurtual and not shared. :)

umm, technically speaking, you are on a shared resource. Its just the each vrtual machine setup won't see other users and thinks its 1 pu for them. But overall, every hardware is shared including bw

Got any white paper for that or any link for such features?
Coz i hardly believe that.

From what i can gather, cpu priority can be set.. but the physical machine still uses 1 physical cpu ( or 2 , if supports dual processing) and till today i never came acorss a "software" that can replace a physical cpu :S

Virtuzo works more or less like VMware, Virtual pc 2004 etc

Bottom line, a VDS will never be fast or equal to a dedicated server

My recommendation, if you want to host any clients, go with a dedicated box. If it's just your website, you may consider a VDS.

It can be very difficult to get the server to respond to SSH / FTP connections when its under a high server load (a load over 5), and this could be very frustrating if you have paying clients.

Not sure how exactly VDS handles load, but it appears to be shared. When the server load was above 20 at one point, I was only using around 0.7% of the two processors. Another VDS user must have been using a lot of processing power to spike the load for me that high. It does appears that those problems have been fixed for the most part within the last few weeks, as I haven't seen the load go above 5 since then.

i don't know about that
i can only see system idle 99% ad load averages above 3-4
also server lags as hell
when loggin in to whm for example i can see in top cpu 99% of that process
and it takes about 5 minutes to login
(i also have another dedicated server with fdc, same line and logs in instantly)

May be you should check the process which one eat too much resource, you can see by using command 'ps aux' and see what process using too much resources ;)

Oh .. .well I wanted to do a free hosting service for popular gaming/anime websites in exchange of ad banner status to pay for the service. I'm abit new at servers, but am experienced enough at server resources, so my main questions are just speed and uptime as well as transfer status.

So, could someone post their site that I could ping and/or browse that is on a VDS plan? This will help me see the speed and uptime as well as response. Thank you.

You can see my some client which hosted on my server (http://www.jfoc.net), the client are :

Looks like this Virtuozo sucks a bit, if you have 8 VMs on one server, and one VM can eat all CPU resources I see no point in selling such VMs. And for vmware this is just a top name. Vmware ESX server can easily share resources among n VMs without eating resources between VMs. Btw. Do you allow to install XEN or VMware ESX on a dedicated server.

thanks, Stoz

if you go with a dedicated server you can install anything you like. if its something that requires the techs to do custom installs when setting up the server your likely out of luck. if its something simple like drive partitions or checking or unchecking packages on the installer there may be a chance it can be done, otherwise you get a default install and you will have to do what you need.

as for VDS, i personally wouldnt go with a vds but thats mostly because i like to have my own hardware. its just something ive always gone with and plan to continue to do.

maybe there is an option to tell to fdc team where your iso image of your OS lies, I saw this somewhere on this page, maybe when selecting OS, not sure.

on virtual server we cannot do custom installs. we only have a few options for VDS.
