im working on building a new server. what i want to do is get a single Opteron cpu but purchase a mobo that supports 1-2 way processors. what im looking at doing is purchasing a single cpu then adding one later on down the road.

what i was looking at was the following:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-412&depa=1

i wasent sure tho if that would work with my plan as i want to start with just one cpu then add another when i so desire. i noted that on that box it only said for 2 way processors and on another it said 1-2 (located here (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-428&depa=1))... would i beable to use just one cpu (246)

thanks in advanced. i will look for a mobo after i find an answer to this question :)

Notice your looking at two totally diffrent products. The first one is a 246 Model, and the second, is a 248. I'm pretty sure that the 246 can only be used in tandem with another, however I might be wrong.

If you look carefully at this picture of a lovely Opteron 248 http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=19-103-428-03.jpg
note there is a difference as it says 1-2 way processing, so perhaps you need to look a little higher in price :( . Yet, on the other hand, before paying close attention to the box pictures, it was always assumed they had 1-2 way processing, because of info directly from AMD. Note the top of this chart http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_8796_9240,00.html
it cleary states "up to 2 way processing" and does not mention any notion as to not working, because the 248 and 246 are in the same categorey, which says those boxes mean nothing IMHO. So, as long as its a 200 series, or 800 (don't know where these are...) it should run by itself, or with 2 or 8, as stated by AMD. Hope this helps you faqall!!!

Sidenote: If I may recommend a motherboard for you dual/single opteron, this would be my pick http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-130-436&depa=1

thanks a bunch, the link was useful

didnt mean to confuse people, wasent looking to combine the 246 and 248 just using the 248 image as refrence to what i was saying about one beingable to support 1 way and 2 way and the other just 2 way

Make sure your cpus are the same revision. As I have heard of problems matching cpus even though they both might be 246. But the revision is important. I was on AMD user forums asking the same questions you are. I finally decided to get dual 246s just to make sure I got the same revision CX.

when I built my dual proc machine, it was athlon MPs, but I could run it with one or two procs, but not all mobos supported this.
