Is dancerircd even viable anymore? The main network for its development freenode has announced some months ago they are dropping it in favor of I think something based on ratbox. Dancer hasnt been updated in years now.

Although I came from an all dancer network but we finally decided to move on to unreal+anope because we were losing hundreds of users to dancers missing features. Not that I like unreal myself but at least we have more control over the server and he users are generally more happy with things. We did something similar on chatsociety which used to run hybrid because we were unable to manage the spam bot problems on hybrid/hybserv2 and also was losing a large number of users.

unreal is good for a n00b network. I wouldn't recommend i for servers planning on having more than 2k users. There are way too many options and the code is huge so it's harder to modify, and it uses quite a bit of resources last I checked. I recommend going with hybrid or a hybrid derivative such as plexus ircd.

P.S. as I write this I've bee up for more than 24 hours lol. but the opinion is still there.

I got a network with 3.5k users on, all unreal based, and we have no such issues :o We've also had times, when we took attacks, that we had 2400 users on a single leaf, and loads were still 0.02 on my cheap-ass celeron :)

Unreal used to be pretty bad, resources wise, but since the release of the 3.2 branch, they've done some -major- over hauling to make it a very nice IRCd to operate with.

Plexus is mainly for rizon, so you have to use their services to support it. For a Hybrid off spring, ratbox is nice. Most of efnet is now ratbox from what i'm seeing :)

There's a lot of extra's in unreal, true, but it makes it easier for controlling said users - it really comes down to what kinda network you wanna be. On efnet, the opers barely deal with the users, so they don't need a lot of things to deal with them - mainly just network/link/hub/etc (which hybrid/ratbox/etc do a -very- good job at).

I think the reason people like Hybrid is 'cuz it's tried and tested. Everyone know's hybrid can hold 1000's of users (don't some of the efnet servers, like blessed, hold like 12k or something?).

We been using Unreal pretty long time..all the way from beta 9 till to date. Our network avges abt 6k with peaks upto 12k.

I agree with francisco, the 2.4 release is much better compared to the previous ones. Our network prefers more features than hybrid style.. So we stuck with unreal from the start. Here's some stats

::: There are 3635 users and 2596 invisible on 25 servers
::: 39 operator(s) online
::: 7 unknown connection(s)
::: 423 channels formed
::: I have 511 clients and 5 servers
::: Current Local Users: 511 Max: 1000
::: Current Global Users: 6231 Max: 12320

we limit our ircd to 1k per leaf. so we never explored the results beyond 1k but i have seens users holding more than 1k on server and it performs fine
