Hey everyone,

This is a really stupid question which I should know what to do, but I don't! lol.

Anyway the problem I am having with my server is that i'm trying to set my domain to point to my new server here but I can't work out what the DNS settings would be and require a little help if possible.

My IP with FDCServers is 66.90.81.59 and ideally the domain should be pointing to http://66.90.81.59/~cell/ (one of the accounts I created in the root cp). My domain provider is godaddy so i'm trying to change it from them but I don't know what the DNS nameservers are and what to put them as in my server cp. the domain name is www.cell-block.com

Please let me know what details you need or what I need to do to find out.

Regards,
Ricky

This has been covered several times..use the search function on this forum ( keyterm godaddy?) and u will see many threads which gives u detailed steps i listed for others.

Just to brief it out:
1) you need 2 sets of ip from fc
2) register ur ns1 and ns2 ( along with ur host and ip ) with godaddy
3) set ur domain to use ur ns1 and ns2 name server.
4) might have to rename/readd that acct u just created

If you are still lost, gimme a shout on msn

You have to registered the nameservers threw godaddy. And make sure they point to the two ip's that fdc assigned to you.

Fdc Gives you one, so you must order the other correct?
I have domain hvstv.com already registered and i want it to point to my new ded server
So i go to DnS zone in plesk put dns records ns.hvstv.com and ns2.hvstv.com one on one ip and one on the other.

Then registered my nameservers threw godaddy? huh shouldnt that be subdomains of my hvstv.com domain why would i need to register it.

you have to register the nameserver so it will point to your server. It usually take 24 hours for it to resolve to the server.your have to set that up in plesk and threw go daddy. and set registered them there. Now it should be free to register them they as your just assigning ips to your nameservers. And yes you need to order another Ip from FDC.

Now I am just guessing blindly but if I am not totally wrong you could probably ask FDC to use their nameservers if you don't want to host your own.
The next step for you would be to log-in on your godaddy account and change the settings for the domain and point the domain to the correct nameservers.
Cheers!

Hello Everyone,

Let me try this in simple terms. Your nameserver is registered through GoDaddy. Their should be a link like "Register Nameserver" or some such.

You only need 1 domain to have the nameserver, but you could have each domain with one. You only actually NEED 1 IP address. It's sloppier, but it's quick.

On the "Register NameServer" page, you'll need to set the host as "ns1", "ns", "nameserver1", or "bobsfirstnameserver" for all that really matters. Just ns1 is usally easier to remember ;)

Now you can setup in cPanel that the account has the nameserver, and the nameserver will point to the right place. IE: ns1.domain.com & ns2.domain.com both resolve to 255.255.255.0 (example). cPanel now looks at the request. Then looks at the IP. Then looks at the domain. Then it forwards to the right folder and requested page (well, apache does this). You can setup domain.com or myotherdomain.com to both use ns1.domain.com & ns2.domain.com AS LONG AS THEY ARE BOTH ON THE SAME IP ADDRESS.

Ya, here is the exception: if mydomain.com is on 255.255.255.10 instead, you will need to create another NS server, otherwise cPanel will report "No domain on this server" error thing.

So that's pretty much it. If you're having problems, troubleshoot with http://www.dnsreport.com

I know this topic is somewhat old, but it seems like it was left with a lot of confusion. If I have any information wrong, let me know. I learned this by trial and error and reading "DNS For Dummies!"-like books.

Cheers & gl
-Brian
