View Full Version : All users become root! oh my god!
whenever i create an acct in my whm, the files & folders in that user acct belongs to root permission, hence not allowing to copy, edit files etc. IS there a way to fix this instead of manually using chown & chgrp to change ownership?
tried run fix scripts but, still not fixed.
created a new account and its the same error!
anyone know how to fix it??
im looking around to see what i can find for ya
please do, i am very desperate to get if fixed :((((
i upload file to ftp, and it says "550: permission denied"
I am offering a small tip US$5 as an appreciation to those who have the issue solved!!
i am logged in in SSH, what command do i type in order to chown a user to full permission?
i have typed this in SSH:
chmod -Rf USERNAMEHERE /path/*
am i doing correct? If its correct, but then when I FTP to the user, still the same error!

no, that syntax is wrong..now only if u saved our MSN convo, you would have typed it right ;)
Once again, to change file ownership, its:
chown <new_owner/username> <path_to_file>
Eg: chown rack /home/test/example.txt
To change group ownership, its:
chgrp <new_owner/username> <path_to_folder>
Eg: chgrp microcrap /home/microsoft/beta
You can also use -fR switch to include subfolders also
I haven't got time to investigate ur issue in depth..but i wil do so after my exam on may 17. Drop me a line on may 18

As you see this error: public_html is not a directory! yes that is correct, I dont know why, I have transfered old accounts to this server, ALL old accounts are perfect and have public_html when I FTP to them. HOWEVER, when I create new accounts at this fdcservers, they dont have public_html directory and I cannot upload file! it says 550 error, permission denied! 2) any idea on how to fix this 550 error?

Great I had the same thing! I manually fixed the permissions and owner/group settings. Just CHmod to 755 and chown en chgrp the dirs.
No, I am getting out. Not only FDC have lost my critical html files due to a hardware crash. But they have also had a downtime for about 5 days / a month.
Say no to FDC!

Say no to FDC!Actually, backing up your own files frequently to prevent data loss in case of any kind of failure is under your full responsibility. This does not apply at FDC only, but almost every hosting provider..
The best solution is to automatically backup your data hourly/daily/weekly (depending on how critical they're) in another server.
you are absolutely off the track. Backup file is NOT equal to losing files!
I backup my files, but so what? They LOST my files. This is FDC side that is error!
Leave FDC.

tekz999, first of all the point of backing up your data is to recover when there is a data loss, no matter what's caused from.
FDC (and most other ISPs) have no responsibility of any data loss that might occur, even if they're the ones who accidentally cause it or if their hardware becomes defective. So instead of making statements such "Leave FDC", make sure you read provider's TOS (Terms of Service) next time which can save you from such trouble that obviously happened due to your ignorance: http://www.fdcservers.net/tos.html
8. Subscriber acknowledges that the service provided is of such a nature that service can be interrupted for many reasons. Therefore, subscriber agrees that the company shall not be liable for any damages. In no event shall the company be liable for any special or consequential damages, loss or injury.

I'm surely not trying to take FDC's side, but as customers, we have to be logical to what kind of expectations and rights we've got from an ISP. You're neither the first neither the last person who got a data loss but the point is to take this as a lesson and learn from this, because most of us have taken this lesson ages ago and instead of blaming the ISP, we simply are trying to backup our data frequently. Unless you had backed up your data as you previously said, so there is no actual reason to continue this discussion as you restored them and everything is back to normal.
Also, instead of uploading images of your ticket, you could be quoting the whole (not just a part of it) ticket, not that it matters though. While calling yourself as a "victim" doesn't really sound good for you.
PS: Giving your ticket's ID in public is not a good idea either, because anyone knowing your email address (or your first/last name which may help finding your email) can can immediatelly access your ticket(s) and view things that you wouldn't like others to see.
its a service thing. The service in here is bad quality. do 1&1 give customer datalost? the planet? NEVER!

tekz999, I strongly disagree as any ISPs can cause you accidental data loss. I've got similar data loss in past from 2 bigger datacenters (actually you already mentioned one of them), so honestly don't be so sure on this. Also, everyone has his own opinion on what is good or bad service, so they don't need you or me or anyone to tell them 'Leave FDC' or 'Say no to FDC'.
From now on, I really hope you'll pay more attention on reading AUP/TOS of service providers. ;)
