View Full Version : How many IPs can i have?
I see FDC gives free ips.
How many can i have?
Usually i can fit 700 or so hosting accounts on a server and I would like to give each of my customers a dedicated ip.
Is this too many ips?
Because its easier for bandwidth monitoring, easy to shut down DDOS attacked sites, SSL etc..
What is limit for IPs on the 1gbit and 100mbit servers?

Ip are free and has to be justified with ARIN !
700 is a big number... But u can easily get 50-75 ips ( as long its justified)
You might wanna check that with sales@fdcservers.net

You want 700 IPs for one server? HA HA HA HA.

and 700 customers on 1 server? poor overloaded server
Thanks.
I knew 700 is a huge amount of ips and i wouldnt get them but it never hurts to ask.
And the server hosts static content only. No scripts or mysql etc... so it runs very well with 700 users. Load is always around 0.60 :)
Dedicated ips would be good for bandwidth monitoring.
Its very cpu intensive to log millions of downloads to thousands of 70kb or so files.
I would nearly need a second server to process the logs of the other one.

Hi Eric,
I think CPANEL has very nice traffic accounting method for domains, plus you can modify your apache to disable access to user folders (~username/), which can provide more accurate traffic accounting.
Of course all these if you are using Apache... :)

Ok, 700 ips on one machine sounds like it would actually push the network card to the edge to me (Imagine a smoking realtek 8139 :D ), I mean that is a lot of ips for one machine to identify itself by. Imagine one mistake with an ip....
What kind of static content is it that 700 people want by the way?
honestly tho, the thought of 700 ips is nice (or one for each client) as when problems come up simply null route the ip :D :D :p ;) :)

Actually guys I have even added 4 C Classes (1000+ IPs) on a single machine, without any NIC problems. I don't think NICs have so low IP limits that will make them slow or unstable. That can be succeeded with a higher amount of IPs maybe.
I really think having 700 IPs for 700 web-sites is quite pointless, unless all these customers need and will *surely* use SSL (https://) pages. In such case, you have an established webhosting company and you surely need more than 1 servers to provide quality services with good stability, small load averages etc. I know that even if you don't have SSL sites, it would help you in nullroutes, bandwidth management/meter (without analyzing huge web logs) but ARIN would never approve something like this.
However, you may ask FDCservers if they can provide you this amount of IPs, or you may request them directly from ARIN (http://www.arin.net). If ARIN accepts your request for /22 block (which is 4 C classes, 1000+ IPs) or /23 block (which is 2 C Classes, 500+ IPs), then you'll have to pay $1,250 per year + AS fees (if you need your own AS number, otherwise they'll point the ip-block to FDC's ASN) as that's the cost for X-Small (Extra Small) category.
Good Luck :)
PS: If you would like to donate a /18 block (64 C classes, 16384 IPs - $4,500 annually + ASN fee) for our current servers, feel free to inform me as it's one of our future plans.. Or even better a /17 block (128 C classes, 32768 IPs) that we'll probably need soon

16384 ps only 4,500/year maybe im really tired or something but i could have sworn that ips were just a hair more than that

128 is the max that FDC will give you per dedi w/o proper justification. (i just asked this yesterday in a e-mail to them)
oh my god! its usually insane have more than 128 per server.
i had 'only' 90 per one server for about one year and that was good enought to my customers.

How can i ask justified IP's? Can i justify: "Well, i'll sell 2 ip numbers for my reseller's nameservers". :D

One word springs in to mind when looking at the prices of IPs:
Monopoly
well there are only so many ips out there

THere are lots of IPs, I bet if IRC was banned globally about half the IPs would come back. A web server needs no more than 1 IP (using external DNS). It is junkys with 700 IPs! :P

A web server needs no more than 1 IP (using external DNS).You're surely right but nowadays, most business websites need SSL for their https:// URLs in order to provide secure login and submission of critical information (ie credit card orders). As there is a limitation for 1 https site per IP address, web servers surely need more than 1 IP(s).

yeah, but doubt they would have 10k IPs :help:
